Alan Wake For PC Canned

News Saturday, February 13th 2010

After what seems like a lifetime since Alan Wake was first announced, (E3 2005, in case your memory has degraded since then) developer Remedy Entertainment has announced that Alan Wake will no longer be shipping on the PC.

The PC version was put on hold in mid-2009, with Remedy stating that they wanted to focus on the Xbox version and that Microsoft, the publisher, would make the final decision about the PC version.

Microsoft said that they felt Alan Wake will be better suited for “the couch in front of a large TV screen”, rather than the “intimacy of the PC”. Obvious bullshit; if the publisher was left to decide the fate of the version, it was clearly because they didn’t think it would sell, not about artistic preference. The spokesperson continued to say that “We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience Alan Wake was on the Xbox 360 platform.”

PC gamers who have been waiting five years for this hyped title are entitled to feel slightly annoyed. While we’ve not seen a great deal of Alan Wake, the premise of an open-world, psychological thriller seems impressive. But you’d better buy an Xbox if you want to enjoy this title. Convenient, eh?

Activision Doesn’t Care About Dedicated Servers. Online Retailers Boycotting

News Friday, November 6th 2009

Activision hates youAfter the news that Modern Warfare 2 on the PC will not feature dedicated servers, Activision has responded by stating that it’s “not overly concerned about it”. So basically PC user, shut the hell up. Even though over 180,000 people signing an online petition to get dedicated servers back in the game, Activision still insists that its proprietary “IWNet” is the way to go. Despite the fact that most PC gamers are perfectly happy with having dedicated servers they can control.

Activision is not only ignoring your complaints, it doesn’t care because it needs to make as much money as possible, even if that means crapping over the existing community that will actually the play the game.

BAD PRESS? GET IT?

Welcome to ‘See Colon Slash’, my weekly column on Negative Gamer. As you might have guessed by the title, the series will be about looking at bleeding rectums. Oh, I got that wrong. It’s actually about PC gaming. If you don’t get the clever pun in the title, perhaps you’re a Linux or Mac user. In your case, the title of the column should be mentally shortened to simply “Slash”.

This week I’d like to pull back from the games on the PC screen and take a look at the aspects of being a PC gamer external to the actual gaming itself. As someone who enjoys the benefits of gaming upon one’s personal computer, I’m not going to be whining about the things people usually whine about when it comes to PC games; instead, I’m going to whine about the whiners who whine about the things that are whined about most often. If you understood that last sentence- congratulations, you are qualified to read on.

suck a bag of discs

Welcome to ‘See Colon Slash’, my weekly column on Negative Gamer. As you might have guessed by the title, the series will be about looking at bleeding rectums. Oh, actually, I got that wrong. I’ve been trying to stop myself talking about DRM (Digital Rights Management), as it’s a much-discussed subject. However, I’ve had enough of one sort of DRM, and I’m going to let everyone know about it. The particular thing that has pissed me off this time is having to have the disc in the drive to play the game. It’s an archaic thing to have to suffer these days. I can see no point in it whatsoever any more.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this week’s theme. I have no doubt that it’s a common problem, even among console gamers. Sometimes, games just refuse to let you play when you want to. Often the culprit is a long, unskippable logo sequence, or an unforgivable loading screen. Although many games suffer from these faults, on PC there are often even more barriers between the player and the game.

See Colon Slash: Cheaters

Until soul has been ebbed away.

No doubt everyone reading this article will have had an experience with cheating in games. It’s something that many people indulge in to get more out of a single-player game once they’re done with it. No doubt you’ve played Vice City with all the cheats on- it was a lot of fun. I don’t blame you. This rant is, however, about the bad kind of cheating. The kind where it is used to gain an advantage over other players when playing multiplayer games.

See Colon Slash: Games for Windows Live

I think Jeremy Paxman might fit in at NG if he played games.

In my (cynical and jaded) eyes, Games for Windows Live is one of the worst aspects of PC gaming right now. There, I said it. Not content with having the operating system monopoly in terms of games, Microsoft now seem intent to force as many games as they can into relying on an awful and outdated overlay system. I’m sure most people who have encountered the system will know what I’m talking about, but if not, let me enlighten you.

Almost as bad as the Robot Wars PS2 game's menus

Welcome to ‘See Colon Slash’, my new weekly column on Negative Gamer. As you might have guessed by the title, the series will be about looking at bleeding rectums. Oh, actually, I got that wrong. It’s actually about PC gaming. If you don’t get the clever pun in the title, perhaps you’re a Linux or Mac user. In your case, the title of the column should be mentally shortened to simply “Slash”.

You might have noticed that all of my Negative Gamer articles so far have been about PC gaming, an area of gaming that has plenty of support behind it, no doubt from a number of Negative Gamer readers. Not only that, but PC gaming is really cool. Perhaps even as cool as educational school videos think smoking is. For those of us who love PC games and wish they were better, Negative Gamer has thus far unfortunately been primarily console-based (although obviously multi-platform titles can be applied to PC users too), and in See Colon Slash I’ll be pointing out the rubbish bits of PC gaming, and rubbish isn’t cool.
