Fallout: New Vegas Trailer Shows Nothing Interesting

News Friday, February 5th 2010

Today, on Bethesda’s main Fallout page they have revealed their Fallout: New Vegas trailer consisting of a robot looking through some sand, and a guy looking at the top-heavy machine. (These revelations can be seen with your own eyes at their own trailer page here or view it below).

It is starting to be a big trend (if not already) to show a mysterious trailer, showing very little of anything, yet trying to capture the attention of the audience with hidden tidbits that spark interest in the viewer. These details are meant to feel like you’ve caught something, found something you weren’t supposed to, and get you pumped for the game at hand. Though the ones I’ve found so far create the feeling of “what the heck does that have to do with anything?”.

Examples of these hidden gems are:

  • What looks like a Pipboy on the shady wastelander’s arm. (Surprise, you’re still a wastelander)
  • The California State Flag held by the wastelander.
  • A “Blue Moon” cover by Frank Sinatra being played from the robot’s built-in TV.
  • An A and seven on the wastelander’s coat. (Signifying what?)

The trailer didn’t pop out at me, or spark my interest in Fallout: New Vegas what so ever.

I liked the bit with the flag.

    CGI……CGI Never Changes

Also, this was the exact same fucking things as the fallout 3 trailer, just instead of zooming out of a bus, it zoomed out a grave site while a song played.

You forgot the flag, one of greatest accomplishments in CGI history.

Surely the big fat elephant in the room here is the apparently fully-functional looking Vegas skyline that is revealed. Fallout 3 didn’t have anything approaching a working city, merely various levels of slum, so the prospect of maybe getting to explore something approaching civilisation surrounded by wasteland is at least vaguely tantalising, I think.

Which is all a teaser trailer is for, isn’t it? It might be that the whole concept of a teaser is annoying, but there have been far worse examples.

I couldn’t agree more with you Peter, the idea of that Vegas still exists even after nuclear fallout is pretty exciting.

I wouldn’t really call them a growing trend teasers trailers are nothing new, they’ve been round for years.

As someone who’s a large fan of this series, I would have to guess that New California Republic(PLAY FALLOUT 2 NOW, DAMMIT) is planning on annexing Vegas, which seems to have at least partially escaped nuclear destruction at least somewhat. I like the use of Sinatra for capturing the retro-future vibe the series is known for.

Though this game is due out during 2010.. I’m a bit concerned that they don’t have more to show by now. Bethesda farmed this out to Obsidian, and if you played Knights of the Old Republic II to the end, you’ll know why I’m worried.

Well, someone’s really laying the “negative nancy” schtick on thick today. Wasn’t aware the first teaser trailer was supposed to reveal much else other than the fact that the game now “officially” exists. Were you expecting intricate plot details and game mechanics?

I’m just going through Fallout 3 now and loving it, so I’m quite intrigued by this. :D

This trailer is awesome to anyone who has played the original Fallout games. As for the rest of you? Click the damn GoG advert on NG, they’re great games and they’re cheap.

    Got some dead people.
