I know I’ve always wanted to play the latest in High Definition gaming on my 3.5-inch cell phone screen! Now with OnLive, a yet unreleased streaming game service, you will be able to do just that. Supposedly. Kind of. Well, not really.
In an effort to keep the wandering attention of the gaming press and appease those pesky investors, OnLive CEO Steve Perlman demonstrated his company’s snake oil service “running simultaneously on two iPhones, a TV, and a computer”. He goes on to kill any excitement generated by his previous bold claim with a little dash of truth thrown in for good measure.
It’s important to understand that a cell phone is a very different beast than TV, PC or Mac [You don't say! Please, continue!]…currently, games on OnLive are tuned for TVs and computers, so initially, it’s the Community and Social elements of OnLive that we’re most excited about on mobile devices.
Oh, I see. It sounds to me like they’re going to offer an OnLive app for the iPhone and other mobile platforms before rolling out a full-featured mobile solution. Sending friends difficult to type messages from the toilet is almost as fun as playing Uncharted 2.
Even if they can get this service up and running “fo reals”; who’s going to want to play a heavily compressed, laggy mobile stream of their next gen titles. Even with LTE somewhere on the horizon, I don’t see today or tomorrow’s mobiles being capable of delivering a satisfying gaming experience that is anywhere near parity with PCs or consoles.
