Edgy Gamer, in a humorous Activision-baiting prank, wrote a support email to the software giants complaining of a “glitch in Modern Warfare 2″. The problem reportedly occurred in both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, appearing irrespective of a hard drive installation or cache clear.
The original poster complains that the glitch does not hinder progress within the campaign, but is “hampering [his] enjoyment of it”, inquiring desperately if anyone else has experienced similar problems with their version of the game.
Every time when I get up to Act 1, Mission 4, the game appears to load fine at first, but then when I encounter the first enemies, I discover that nearly all of them have been rendered without weapons. They aren’t even programmed to melee attack either. There are a small number of badies [sic] with guns, but it’s not until towards the end of the mission that most of them have weapons.
The joke, amusing in its own right, was picked up by Activision themselves with a friendly member of tech-support staff claiming no internal knowledge of the problem, and placing potential blame on the user’s Xbox. “This does not appear to be a known issue with the game. Does this occur for you when playing on a different Xbox 360 as well?”
With the notorious “No Russian” stage already snowballing in publicity, this sort of embarrassing own-goal can do little for the publisher’s media profile. Although the subtle masking of the stage’s now legendary title in the support request has caused a number of Edgy Gamer commentators to miss the faux-naivety of the piece, it is difficult to read the suggestion to make sure the offending “Xbox 360 console is in a well ventilated area” without a big Kotick-hating smile on your face. An innocent error, but a subtle victory for us gaming Davids against an industry Goliath.
