Here it is, the Modern Warfare 2 OUTRAGE has begun. The Daily Mail (who else) is reporting on that controversial level, claiming that “critics” have accused Activision of being irresponsible, despite the fact that the scenes have been shown in movies a thousand times. Keith Vaz, Labour MP said he was “Absolutely shocked by the level of violence in this game and am particularly concerned about how realistic the game itself looks”.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON, CONTINUE AT YOUR OWN PERIL.

“Outrage as new videogame lets players kill civilians in terror attacks” reads The Mail’s headline, while Mr Vaz claims he will be bringing up the demise of society in Parliament on Monday. In case you don’t know, the game’s first level features you as an undercover agent attacking an airport in Moscow, where you are free to kill fleeing civilians.

Obviously nothing like a 52 year old non-gamer to judge the violence of a videogame. Surely if you’re a critic then you need to have some sort of expertise in the field of videogaming? Mr Vaz has been involved in previous lobbying to get games such as Manhunt and Bully banned, although in an interview regarding Bully he stated that he had not played the game. I’ve seen the level and yes, it is violent but it’s nothing that you couldn’t do in any Hitman game, or Kane & Lynch for example. Infinity Ward has made an interesting level that was always going to get articles like this, so it’s not much of a shock to see The Daily Mail reporting  essentially, that there is violence in videogames. Shock, horror.

I love the way they take it totally out of context for the headline. And probably the content, too.

    Keith Vaz is the truth.

Somebody stop Vaz quickly. Him talking about the “demise of society” could create a black hole from the irony alone.
