The petition to ask Infinity Ward to reconsider butchering the PC version of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer has now passed the 100,000 signatures mark. That’s a lot of angry PC gamers (though I somehow doubt this correlates to 100K lost sales). Infinity Ward, talking to Game Informer, have responded.
Firstly, Infinity Ward’s reply makes sense until you read it, and secondly the Game Informer article in question is clearly written with about as much balance as a Negative Gamer article. For example, in summing up the current situation the author says:
Among other things, this [announcement] means that clans can’t run their own servers with their own mods and rulesets for their own private (or public, if they feel like crushing some scrubs for giggles) use.
Predictably, nerds across world took to the Internet with a wailing and a gnashing of teeth that would make the Left 4 Dead community proud.
The main gist of IW’s response is that the PC gamers who benefit from being able to have dedicated servers make up a very small fraction of the total players, so this dumbing down move helps the majority.
Oddly Jason West, described as one of Infinity Wards heads, maintains that having both options, dedicated and global match making, would “bifurcate the community.” Which, if those wanting to set up their own dedicated servers and not go through IWNet is a small minority, makes no sense at all. I assume the real reason is that they’ll eventually want to charge a monthly fee for IWNet and they know how to do damage control.
As a side note, is anyone else getting sick, as with the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott situation, with people claiming these tens of thousands of people are all idiots? First they came for the PC gamers…

Update: Talking to NG, Dave Wilks, founder of the petition, said he never expected it would be this popular. He also added that all they want “is to be able to run our servers from a dedicated box which we rent from a GSP, to be able to run clan matches on a decent connection instead of relying on someone on a 56 k modem (lol) & to be able to mod the rules of these servers to what WE want.” Considering that’s standard for nearly every other PC game previously, I’d say it’s fair enough.

As usual, I’m with you Wardrox. As a dedicated (pun not intended) PC gamer, modder and semi-”esporter” the fact that you’ll only be able to have inferior listen servers really turned me off an seemingly awesome game.
And on another obvious note: It’s (just like you said) extremely immature and downright “evil” to call everyone who choses to boycott och sign a petition against something an idiot. The only way consumers can be heard is (as stated many times) to not buy something, an action that in this case might lead to no future PC-versions of otherwise good games. So we boycott stuff because we care about it, and then we get called idiots by “games journalists” who care more about free games and “dev relations” then anything else.

Ug… they mention how the PC community sucks for CoD4, but iirc the PC port of that game was an afterthought for IW who was focuesd squarely on the console crowd. If you don’t support a community and help it grow of course it will stagnate, leaving only the hardcore players and the trolls/cheaters. This is just a move so they don’t have to put the effort into maintaining a level of standard within the community around the game. :\
And in regards to their mention of the money to be made in selling dedicated servers… um, why don’t they offer the service? They’d make the money, people who want dedicated servers would be happy, and they’d technically still be in controll of them.

I bought the game and wanted to hang myself after i played it. Fail is all i can say. I have over 3 meg connection and i lag balls on 9v9. i mean wth. I want what i payed for. that is dedicated server support. I assumed that there would be dedicated servers and bought it without looking into it because you would assume that from a call of duty game. Wow butchered pc version. I think ima shoot my xbox with m14 tommorow. It makes me sick

@clonme: A lot of people, much like @Jordan probably don;t read as much online as we do. The lack of dedicated servers wasn’t printed on the box, so I know loads of people who just assumed it would all be there.
I already decided I am not buying another game from them. They can *****************. Bad Company 2 looks sick and hopefully EA delivers 64 player matches that I have come to love. Glad i only bought one copy of this game not two like I always do to play with my son. I can’t believe i paid $60 for it either first PC game at that price. This company is yet another driven by corporate greed and not caring about the community. I must say EA worries me a bit but I’m willing to take my chances with them at this point.

I paid for it, i didn’t even phantom that it didn’t support dedicated servers. I am a gamer at heart but I’m a busy individual and I don’t sit there watch and read about the latest and greatest games like some. I knew the COD games were great and only assumed it would remain that way. The game sure did deliver in every way with one exception.

Wow since when did Cod4 have IWnet? Since when did cod4 have anyway to play online other than dedicated servers? For that matter can you name a single pc game besides mw2 that doesn’t support dedicated servers? I bought mw2 for pc thinking that it would have dedicated servers. If I had known differently me and every other cod 4 gamer on the planet would have bought it for consol or not at all. Though even consol is littered with hackers so I’m not regertting it as much.
