Rant Top 5 Ways to Successfully Defend The NXE

The internet is literally exploding into puppies and kittens today as Microsoft revolutionises everything with its new user interface. But much to the dismay of the happy-go-lucky gamers, there are some nay-sayers who can never be happy. They just wander around, shouting about how the update is aimed at whoring out to your mother what you were sold as a “hardcore games console“.

How do typical gamers combat this blatant trolling? With some of the dumbest arguments I have seen in a long time. For reference, the following “arguments” are neither effective or good.

  • So what? Other companies do shit too. It’s just business
  • You don’t have to pay for it
  • Home is crap
  • Quit being a bitch and go pay for your Xbox to be fixed

Non of the above will actually get your point across, and will lead to nothing but scorn from your intended target. To give you a helping hand, here are my Top 5 ways to successfully defend the pile of wank NXE.

5. It looks nice

Point out that MS paid a lot of money for it to be well designed. They may have borrowed a few ideas from Apple, but Apple are well known for their great user interfaces. The rounded corners and gradients are very web 2.0 and have made the console less of a eye sore.

4. It brings a few features that are actually quite good

The party system and installing games are good things. The former just makes stuff easier, and the latter means the console becomes quieter and hopefully more reliable. It’s also optional.

3. You don’t look as nerdy using it

When people who don’t game watched you use the old blades, you looked kinda dorky. Now you just look like a technological simpleton, just like them! Other people can finally begin to understand just what the hell you are doing.

2. If MS make more money, they make more games

Standard business dictated that if MS and their grab at the casual market succeeds, they will earn more money. Not all of it can be spent on crap copies of other casual games. At least some will go back into making actually good games.

1. Real gamers don’t give a shit

The NXE is like the menu in a DVD player; most people won’t give a shit. Real, hardcore gamers will simply use it as a quick bridge in and between games. As long as Gears 3 doesn’t have Avatar support, you will probably never know something has changed.

See? Much more convincing arguments.

    another overhyped thing from MS

I love how people who own all three systems thinks it makes them an equal-opportunity person.

I own a Wii… the thing is a fucking paperweight.

i didnt say i hated any of the systems, but i agree with u there the wii is collecting dust in my house, i love my 360 and ps3 but the NXE is over hyped its just a user interface its nothing special

I downloaded the NXE last night, and I really don’t like it. Not because it’s a change, not because it’s Microsoft… it’s just clumsy to me. Takes much longer to get anywhere. And most of the time when my XBox is on, it’s acting as a media server. I do hate the way they lay friends out… but I’m one of those guys who prefers to see a list where a list is appropriate. Such as, which of my friends are online. Or, which of 30 different menus I can go into. I don’t dislike the NXE for what it is; I dislike it for using panes where a list is much more appropriate. Please note I also use WMP10 for the same reason. 11 is too pretty and not informative enough.

May I also point out that your Friends list never used to be on the dashboard but accessible through the guide button blade (as they continue to be now). So the new Friends list with Avatar’s is an addition not a redesign!
