News Sony Pictures Take Their Netflix Ball and Go Home

Joystiq’s James Ransom-Wiley stumbled upon a rather interesting problem with the new Netflix film and TV service for the Xbox 360.

Apparently Sony have refused to licence any of their films for the Xbox version of Netflix. I wonder what could have made them do that? Steve Swasey, Netflix VP of corporate communications spoke to MTV Multiplayer to explain what’s going on.

In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console. Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.

Glad to get a solid explanation. Though I can’t help but feel he might be using PR speak to gloss over a few facts. Namely the fact that Sony, just like Microsoft, is run by bickering children with no regard for the people who are actually trying to use their services.

Hmm. This is good business sense. But kind of a douche thing to do.

Back in the day before mass communication was so rampant this kind of slightly underhand business tactic would have gone undetected by the public.
