Amazon DRM Backlash… Again. Little Crysis Warhead Never Had a Chance

News Thursday, October 23rd 2008

Remember all that fuss over Spore having SecuROM DRM? DRM so harsh you had to phone up EA and explain yourself if you had the nerve to install it more than a few times? Now, remember when you found out that Crysis Warhead had SecuROM, even on steam?

Yes, it’s that time again! Get ready for our soon-to-be-weekly feature: “EA Put Shitty DRM on a Game and so People Give it a 1 Star Review on Amazon”!

Catchy theme tune music plays

Ok, there isn’t going to be a soon-to-be-weekly feature abbreviated to “EPSDGOPG1*RA”. But chances are we will be hearing about this a lot over the next few years. It seems that Amazon.com is the new battle ground for anti-DRM minded people.

The most popular review on the Amazon page explains the situation.

Crysis is simply amazing, and I expect Warhead to be excellent also. I’ve waited for this release, but sadly, I will not be buying it. The DRM in this game is a deal-breaker

It’s almost upsetting to see a good game get put in such negative light. As with Spore, the DRM is completely outside of the developers control, and yet they will feel the punishment (if you can call bad reviews that).

One other thing highly likely to come out of all this is the tried-and-tested argument defending (all be it indirectly) DRM. The “this is old news, just accept it and move on” argument. If you see anybody trying this, please punch them in the face.

Unless a loud voice is heard whenever companies like EA try to shaft sell gamers a rental, things will only get worse.

My expectations for Red Alert 3 are incredibly high. I’m an RTS nut and everything I’ve seen about the game looks incredible… except for the DRM. If they go through with their plans to include the same bs DRM in RA3 as has been in Spore and Crysis: Warhead, then I simply won’t buy it. Regardless of the fact that I have legally purchased every other C&C game made. If RA3 has that level of DRM, I refuse to buy it, plain and simple.

Since EA and DRM already are acronyms, wouldn’t the feature be EAPSDRMGOPG1*RA instead of EPSDGOPG1*RA? :)
